Florida homes sit between 70 and 80 percent relative humidity most of the year. Your AC is supposed to pull that number down to somewhere between 45 and 55 percent indoors — the range where you feel genuinely cool, mold has a hard time taking hold, and your wood floors stop swelling. If your house feels damp and clammy even with the AC running, the fix probably isn't a dehumidifier. It's usually the AC system itself.
The most common cause we see: an oversized system. A unit that's too large for the space blasts the air temperature down fast and shuts off — sometimes in eight or ten minutes. That short cycle never gives the evaporator coil enough run-time to wring moisture out of the air. You get cold air, but you don't get dry air. The result is a 68°F house that still reads 60% RH on the hygrometer. Clammy. Musty. Exactly what people spend money trying to fix with a portable dehumidifier when the real problem is in the equipment room.
What Your Indoor Humidity Should Actually Be
Target 45–55% relative humidity year-round. Below 40% and you start getting dry skin, static, and wood that contracts. Above 55% and mold spores have the conditions they need. Above 60%, it's not just uncomfortable — you're actively growing problems. A basic plug-in hygrometer costs about $15 and tells you exactly where you stand. If you don't own one, get one before you spend anything else.
Why Oversizing Is the Hidden Enemy
When an HVAC contractor sizes a system correctly, they run a Manual J load calculation — a room-by-room analysis of your home's heat gain, insulation, window area, ceiling height, and local climate data. Skip that step and contractors often default to "bigger is better," which is exactly wrong for humidity control.
A properly sized system runs long, steady cycles — typically 15 to 20 minutes per cooling run. During that time, the evaporator coil gets cold enough and stays cold long enough to condense significant moisture out of the air. An oversized system short-cycles. The coil never reaches its dehumidification sweet spot before the thermostat cuts the call. Cold, damp air gets pushed through your ducts, and the cycle repeats.

Airflow Problems Compound the Issue
A clogged filter, kinked flex duct, or closed supply register starves the coil of airflow. When airflow drops, the coil gets too cold and can freeze — and a frozen coil pulls almost no moisture. Even a well-sized system will underperform on humidity if airflow is restricted. Check your filter first. It's free.
When a Whole-Home Dehumidifier Actually Makes Sense
There are real cases where a standalone whole-home dehumidifier earns its place. Beach houses and homes on the water deal with salt air and persistent humidity that a correctly sized AC still can't fully manage. Homes with finished basements or large unconditioned spaces under the floor sometimes need supplemental help. And if your home is very well insulated and tight — newer construction — the system may not run long enough even when sized right, because the envelope is doing too good a job holding temperature.
In those cases, a ducted dehumidifier wired to your air handler is the right call. But it's the last step, not the first. Fix sizing and airflow first.
- Check your hygrometer. Know your actual indoor RH before spending anything.
- Replace the filter. Restricted airflow kills dehumidification performance before anything else fails.
- Time your run cycles. If the system shuts off in under 12 minutes on a hot day, it may be oversized.
- Ask about Manual J. If you can't confirm it was done, it probably wasn't.
