Short answer: most Jacksonville homes don't need a furnace. A heat pump with electric auxiliary heat strips handles Northeast Florida winters reliably and costs less to operate than a gas system in our climate. What a Heat Pump Does That a Furnace Can't

A heat pump isn't just a heater. It's a year-round system that cools in summer and heats in winter using the same refrigerant circuit. You buy one piece of equipment, one maintenance schedule, and one set of installation costs. A gas furnace in Florida still requires a separate cooling system — a standalone AC unit or a split system — which means two major systems, two refrigerant circuits, and two maintenance schedules.

In a climate where you run cooling nine or ten months a year, the heat pump's efficiency in cooling mode matters more than its heating performance. A modern heat pump runs at 18–22 SEER2 in cooling. A gas furnace delivers no cooling efficiency at all.

Operating Cost in Northeast Florida

Gas furnaces are efficient heaters — 96% AFUE models waste almost nothing in combustion. But Northeast Florida doesn't give that efficiency a long season to work in. Our heating season is roughly 8 to 10 weeks of meaningful demand, with maybe a dozen nights below 35°F in a cold year. At that usage level, the gas savings over electric strips are real but modest — and they're often offset by gas utility fees that run year-round whether you're using it or not.

Heat pumps gain their edge from the math: they don't generate heat, they move it. For every unit of electricity consumed, a good heat pump delivers two to three units of heat output. That coefficient of performance drops as outdoor temperatures fall — at 35°F, it's still well above 1.0, which is where electric strips sit. Below 25°F, efficiency narrows further, but Jacksonville rarely sustains those temperatures for more than a night or two at a stretch.

What Heat Strips Actually Do

Every heat pump installed in Northeast Florida should include auxiliary electric heat strips in the air handler. These are the backup: when outdoor temperatures drop below the heat pump's efficient operating range, or when the thermostat setpoint is more than 3–4 degrees away and the heat pump can't catch up fast enough, the strips engage automatically.

They're not efficient — watt-for-watt, strips are the same as an electric furnace — but they're rarely needed for more than a few hours per cold night. The overall seasonal operating cost stays low because the heat pump carries 90% of the heating load.

  • Heat pump covers. Temperatures above 35°F, which is most of our winter.
  • Strips cover. Hard-freeze nights, system defrost gaps, and fast temperature recovery after a door-open event.
  • Neither needs the other. The heat pump and strips operate independently — one can fail while the other keeps you comfortable.

When a Furnace Actually Makes Sense in Florida

We're not going to tell you gas furnaces never make sense here. A few situations where the math works differently:

  • Existing gas infrastructure. If your home already has a gas line and a gas water heater, the marginal cost to add a gas furnace is lower. No new line run, no meter upgrade.
  • Unusual heating demand. High-ceiling homes, poorly insulated older construction, or a property that runs significantly colder than neighbors may actually accumulate enough heating hours for the gas efficiency to pay off.
  • Strong preference for furnace heat feel. Some homeowners simply prefer the drier, hotter air that a gas furnace delivers. That's a legitimate preference, not a wrong one.

In all other cases — new construction, existing electric service, standard Jacksonville housing stock — a heat pump with auxiliary strips is the straightforward recommendation. It's what our techs have in their own homes.
