It cools from March through October, switches to heat mode on every cold snap from November through February, and in a normal year logs somewhere around 3,000 to 3,500 run hours. A Northern furnace that runs five months a year might last 20 years on one service call. Your Jacksonville heat pump can hit the same age markers — but only if it's maintained accordingly.

Why Twice a Year Matters in Florida (Not Just Once)
The standard "spring tune-up" advice assumes a system that hibernates all winter. Heat pumps in Northeast Florida don't. They're running in heating mode the morning after a freeze, back to cooling by noon, and running dehumidification in between. Two visits per year — one before peak cooling season, one before heating season — let us catch issues in both operating modes before they fail under load. A coil that's 15% dirty in March is a coil that freezes up in July. Catching it in April costs you a coil rinse. Missing it costs you a service call in 90-degree heat.

In heating mode, same restricted airflow makes the system work harder and long-cycle, which wears the compressor faster than almost anything else.
One-inch disposable filters: check every 30 days, replace when they're gray. MERV 13 media cabinet filters: every 3 to 6 months. If you have pets or anyone in the house with respiratory issues, lean toward the shorter end. This is the single cheapest maintenance item on your system and the one that causes the most breakdowns when skipped.
Outdoor Unit — What You Can Do Between Visits
The condenser coil on the outdoor unit pulls air through a metal fin matrix. In Florida, pollen, cottonwood seed, and lawn debris clog that matrix constantly. A unit that's 20% blocked runs hotter, works harder, and wears the compressor faster. You can rinse the outdoor coil with a regular garden hose — spray from the inside out (through the top grille down and out the sides) to push debris outward rather than packing it deeper. Don't use a pressure washer. Don't spray toward the electrical disconnect.
Also: keep 18 inches of clearance around all sides of the cabinet. Shrubs, fencing, and stored equipment that crowd the unit restrict airflow and trap heat. A unit running in 95-degree ambient heat with restricted airflow is a compressor running toward its end-of-life.
What the Pro Tune-Up Actually Covers

- Coil cleaning (both sides). Chemical rinse of the evaporator coil and condenser coil — the work that keeps efficiency where it was at install.

A well-maintained heat pump in Florida can reach 15 to 18 years. But the calculus changes after year 10. Capacitors and contactors start cycling through faster.
