If your AC is somewhere between year eight and year fourteen, the question stops being academic. A capacitor pops, a contactor pits, a coil starts leaking — and the next sentence out of the tech's mouth decides whether you're writing a $400 check or a $9,000 one.
This is the framework we walk customers through on every repair-or-replace call. No upsell math, no scare tactics — just the same logic we'd use on our own homes.
Start with the $5,000 Rule
The shorthand most of the trade uses: multiply the repair quote by the system's age in years. If the result clears $5,000, replacement starts winning. A $300 capacitor on a six-year-old unit ($1,800) is an easy fix. A $1,200 compressor on an eleven-year-old unit ($13,200) is a different conversation.
It's a rule of thumb, not a law. But it forces you to weigh the next repair against the next one — and the one after that.
What Actually Drives the Decision
The age × cost math is the headline. These are the four variables that decide which way it tips:
- Refrigerant type. R-22 systems are at end-of-life in Florida. R-410A is being phased down. If you're on either, repair pricing on refrigerant-side leaks isn't going to get better.
- What's failing. Caps, contactors, blower motors — repair. Evaporator coils, compressors, multiple components in one call — start running replacement numbers.
- How often it's needed help. Two service calls a season is the system telling you. Three is a system pleading.

When We Recommend Repair
For systems under year ten with a single failed component, repair is almost always the right answer. Cap, contactor, blower motor, condensate pump, drain line — these are bread-and-butter calls. A good AC repair visit with parts under warranty gets you back to comfortable in 45 minutes, and you've spent under $500 in nine cases out of ten.

When We Recommend Replacement
The phrase we use is "your money would work harder on a new system." It comes up when:
- The compressor is the failed component on a system past year ten.
- The evaporator coil is leaking on a system past year eight (this is a common Florida failure mode and the repair cost approaches replacement).
- You're on R-22 and the system needs more than a routine refrigerant charge.
- The system has needed a service call in three or more of the last four cooling seasons.

What to Ask Before You Decide
Whoever's standing in your driveway, ask these three:
- What's the part cost vs. labor cost on this repair?
- What else is showing wear on this system right now?
- If I called you back with another failure in 18 months, what's the second-most-likely thing it would be?
The answers tell you whether you're solving a problem or postponing one. Both are valid choices — they just shouldn't be the same choice.
The Short Answer
If your AC is under ten years old and only one thing has failed, repair. If it's twelve-plus and the failure is on the refrigerant side, replace. Between those, run the age-times-cost number and bring it to a tech you trust.
