Ideal Conditions – Why is My Furnace Blowing Cool Air?

There is a chill in the air and you know that you are going to need some warm air blowing overnight to keep you comfortably warm.  You set your thermostat to reach your ideal temperature and the air starts blowing.  But the air that is blowing is not warm.  Why is your furnace blowing cool air when you need it to be blowing warm air?  Ideal Conditions Heating & Air Conditioning Inc. specializes in all types of HVAC issues for property owners in and around Jacksonville, FL and can help you fix this issue.

Possible Reasons your Furnace is Blowing Cool Air

There could be a number of reasons that your furnace is blowing cool air, and some of them are actually easy fixes.  The first thing we recommend is make sure that your thermostat is not set to FAN.  That setting keeps air blowing at all times, regardless of the temperature at which you have set your thermostat.  In other words, your furnace may be blowing warm air when the interior temperature dips below your set temperature, but the air continues to blow anyway because it is set to FAN.  If it is set to FAN, but you want your fan to blow only when it is ready to blow warm air, set the thermostat to AUTO.

If you have determined that this is not your issue, you may want to check your furnace filter.  Filters that are clogged with too much dust and dirt block the flow of air over the heat exchanger.  This can trigger overheating, which can send a signal to the high-limit switch, which turns off the burners so the heat exchanger does not sustain damage.  The consequence is that warm air will not blow.

While you may be able to check their furnace filters on their own, you may also feel more comfortable partnering with our HVAC specialists to ensure that your furnace is working properly. We can clean and/or replace your furnace filter for a very low cost and make sure that we do not see other problems with your HVAC system. Another problem we also find when your furnace is blowing cool air is a problem with your pilot light.  If your pilot light is not lit, the burners will not light and that will result in cool air blowing when you obviously want warm air to be blowing.
